Privacy Policy

Last updated: 18 August 2026.

This policy explains what personal information Small Marks collects, why it is used, which services help process it, and the choices available to you.

Who is responsible

The Small Marks editor is responsible for privacy questions and requests. Use the Contact page and begin your message with “Privacy request” so it can be handled correctly.

Information you choose to provide

Newsletter and free ebooks

If you enter your email address in a Small Marks newsletter form, the address is registered immediately and used to deliver the free Motif & Meaning series and occasional Small Marks newsletters. The custom form does not send a separate confirmation email. MailPoet stores the subscription in this WordPress site.

Newsletter delivery may record opens, link clicks, delivery status, and related engagement information. MailPoet may use a browser cookie when a subscriber follows a measured link. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link. You can also use the Contact page to request access, correction, or deletion.

Contact messages

The Contact form asks for your name, email address, and message. The information is emailed to the publication so the editor can read and answer it. Contact messages are not added to the newsletter. Please do not send medical records, payment details, or other sensitive information.

Short-lived, one-way identifiers derived from the connection address are used to limit repeated newsletter and contact-form submissions and reduce abuse.

Search

If you use the site search, the words you enter are used to return results. Search terms may also appear in routine site or analytics records.

Information collected automatically

The website, hosting provider, and Cloudflare may process technical information such as IP address, browser and device type, requested page, referring page, request time, error information, and security signals. This information is used to deliver the site, prevent abuse, diagnose problems, and protect the service.

Cookies and analytics

Necessary cookies or similar storage remember consent choices and support security and basic site functions. With your permission, Google Analytics measures visits, referral sources, approximate location, device and browser information, and interactions such as page views and outbound clicks. Small Marks uses this information to understand which guides are useful and to improve site performance. Advertising is not enabled.

You can accept, reject, or customise optional cookies in the consent banner. Clearing browser storage may cause the banner to appear again. Cloudflare may also process limited technical information for security and performance. Learn more about Google’s handling of data on its partner-sites privacy page and Cloudflare’s handling of data in its privacy policy.

Who receives information

Small Marks uses service providers only as needed to operate the site: WordPress and MailPoet for publishing and newsletters, the hosting and email providers for delivery, Cloudflare for security and performance, CookieYes for consent controls, and Google Analytics when analytics consent is given. These providers may process information outside Canada under their own service terms and privacy safeguards.

Small Marks does not sell or rent personal information. Information may be disclosed when required by law, to protect the site or its users, or as part of a service-provider relationship described above.

How long information is kept

Newsletter addresses and related delivery or engagement records are kept while the subscription is active or as reasonably needed to operate and document the email service. Contact messages are kept only as long as reasonably needed to answer the request, maintain necessary records, or address a security or legal issue. Analytics, consent, hosting, and security records follow the retention settings of the relevant service.

Your choices and requests

You may unsubscribe from newsletters at any time, reject optional analytics cookies, or ask to access, correct, or delete personal information held by Small Marks. Use the Contact page and identify the request clearly. Some information may need to be retained for security, legal, or record-keeping reasons, and deletion by Small Marks may not remove records controlled independently by another provider.

If a privacy concern is not resolved, you may also contact the privacy regulator that applies where you live.

Children

Small Marks is written for adults planning tattoos and does not knowingly seek personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information, use the Contact page so it can be reviewed.

Security

Small Marks uses access controls, form validation, anti-abuse measures, and service providers to protect information. No website or email system can guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

This policy will be updated when the site’s forms, analytics, newsletter, or service providers change. The date at the top shows the latest revision.
